AUTISM: Environmental Links

Updated: Apr 18, 2023

In 2023, the CDC reported that approximately 1 in 36 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Has your child been diagnosed with autism? Perhaps you are an adult living with autism? Many different integrative approaches are available to help those with ASD function better and have a more fulfilled life.

The long debate has been- what causes autism? Most medical providers think genetics are the main cause. But, if genetics were the main cause, then would be it be rising so quickly?

Another more likely cause is environmental factors. Our environment is becoming more toxic in numerous ways. Here are some environmental toxins that may be linked with autism...

Red spiral lollipop candies

Prenatal and/or early childhood exposure to:

  • Mold

  • Pesticides

  • Vaccines

  • Viruses

  • Heavy metals

  • Artificial food dyes (red 40, blue 1, etc.)

  • Air pollutants

Genetics can alter the ways our bodies detox these toxins. Those with ASD often have more difficulty detoxing these toxins out of their bodies. Integrative medicine offers solutions for treating chronic viruses and mold toxicity, and can help the body improve its detoxification pathways through lifestyle changes, herbal medicines, nutrient supplementation, and more.
