Asthma is a chronic disease, causing coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. Asthma in children is extremely prevalent affecting more than six million U.S. children under 17. In addition, a chronic cough caused by postnasal drip from allergies can lead to upper respiratory tract infections which may become severe. If not addressed, both can lead to further lung damage. Every year approximately 9% children with asthma-related symptoms experience multiple visits to the Emergency Department with about 1 in 20 children hospitalized. In addition, many of these children also miss several days of school.
Whether your child has a chronic cough or asthma, chiropractic care can work towards alleviating their symptoms. Spinal manipulation increases the range of motion of the thoracic spinal area that houses the lungs. This manipulation can relieve the stress upon nerves and muscles which enables the spinal cord and surrounding nerves to regain proper functioning. Chiropractic care not only alleviates chronic cough but also a host of other conditions.
It's common for pediatric patients to report a dramatic decrease in inhaler use after chiropractic adjustments. As for those with chronic cough, improved breathing has also been reported.
Case One: 10-year-old was taken to my office due to non-resolved asthmatic wheezing and coughing resulting in multiple missed days of school. After examination and a treatment plan of 8 weeks, he reported complete resolution of coughing and wheezing, and zero missed no days of school.
Case Two: A 65-year-old man recently recovered from pneumonia. As a result, he had a lingering cough, shortness of breath, and persistent hiccups. After a thoracic adjustment he was able to take a deep breath, stating that he had not been able to breathe that clearly even prior to his pneumonia spell.
