The ADD and Gluten Connection
Emerging research suggests a potential link between diet—particularly gluten and processed foods—and attention deficit disorders like ADD. For individuals sensitive to gluten, the protein can trigger an inflammatory response that impacts gut health and, by extension, brain function. Studies have highlighted how the gut-brain axis plays a pivotal role in mental health, with conditions like leaky gut exacerbating symptoms of ADD and other neurodevelopmental disorders.
Growing up on a diet filled with processed snacks, sugary treats, and hidden gluten sources often left me feeling scattered and unfocused. Unfortunately, at the time, few people were aware of the impact of diet on neurological health. Adderall became the default solution, masking symptoms without addressing the underlying causes.
For me, growing up with undiagnosed gluten sensitivity likely compounded my struggles with concentration. My body was constantly inflamed, my energy unpredictable, and my focus fleeting. At the time, medication seemed like the only solution, but it wasn’t addressing the root cause—it was merely masking the symptoms.
The Challenge of Coming Off Medication
Years later, I decided to stop taking Adderall, a decision that came with its own set of hurdles. Initially, my brain felt sluggish, and my energy levels were inconsistent. I struggled with focus, emotional regulation, and productivity, questioning whether I had made the right choice.
However, this difficult period turned out to be a transformative turning point. By addressing the underlying factors—my diet, movement, and nervous system balance—I began to unlock a level of mental clarity and energy I hadn’t experienced before.
How LYT Yoga Transformed My Brain and Body
One of the most profound changes came through LYT Yoga, a movement system uniquely designed to challenge both the brain and body. Before discovering LYT, I was an avid exerciser who felt dependent on medication to sustain the energy needed for my workouts after a long workday. My routine revolved around monotonous, repetitive activities—endless minutes on treadmills, ellipticals, or stationary bikes, paired with the same predictable exercises using hand weights. While these workouts kept me moving, they lacked variety, intentionality, and a mind-body connection.
LYT Yoga changed everything. The practice focuses on functional movement, core engagement, and dynamic sequences that activate both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Unlike my old routines, which felt mechanical and one-dimensional, LYT Yoga required me to be fully present and mentally engaged. For someone like me, who craved structure but desperately needed balance, it was revolutionary.
The practice offered the perfect combination of mental stimulation and physical challenge while also creating space for deep relaxation and focus. Over time, I noticed my brain working more efficiently—tasks that once felt overwhelming became manageable, and my ability to multitask and stay present improved dramatically. With LYT Yoga, I found a movement system that not only strengthened my body but also unlocked my mind's potential in a way no traditional exercise ever had.
Dietary Changes: The Foundation of Focus
Complementing my yoga practice were significant changes to my diet. I completely eliminated gluten and dairy, two common culprits of inflammation and brain fog. Instead, I focused on whole, nutrient-dense foods to support brain health.
I also incorporated herbs and essential oils known for their cognitive benefits. Rosemary, peppermint, and adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha became staples in my routine. Other supplements I found useful to improve attention included Ginkgo biloba, astaxanthin, CoQ10, and acetyl-L-carnitine. These natural remedies helped stimulate my brain and improve my mood without the side effects of medication.
Rediscovering Connection and Emotional Clarity
Perhaps the most unexpected gift of this journey was the emotional clarity that emerged. While medication helped me focus, it also muted my emotional responses. Coming off Adderall allowed me to reconnect with my feelings, enhancing my relationships with family and friends in ways I hadn’t experienced in years. Feeling genuine love, joy, and connection reminded me why I pursued this path in the first place: to live fully and authentically.

Supporting Research on Diet and ADD
If you’re curious about the role of diet in attention disorders, here are some valuable resources:
A 2016 study in the Journal of Attention Disorders found that children with ADHD were more likely to have symptoms of gluten sensitivity and benefit from a gluten-free diet.
A 2011 review in The Lancet highlighted the impact of processed foods and food additives on hyperactivity and attention in children.
Research from the American Journal of Psychiatry points to the role of omega-3 fatty acids and whole foods in supporting brain health and reducing ADHD symptoms.
Takeaway
Every individual’s journey with focus and energy is unique. While medication can be a helpful tool for some, exploring the root causes and incorporating holistic practices can lead to profound and lasting change.
For me, a combination of dietary changes, LYT Yoga, and natural remedies not only improved my focus but also brought me back to life emotionally and physically.
